What is MicroFIT? What's all the fuss?

Along with the social benefits of going green, the microFIT Program has attractive pricing for generators.

Here’s one example of up front costs and returns for a typical microFIT project. It would cost about $30,000 to purchase and install solar PV panels on the roof of a home or commercial property. The panels would take up about 4 metres x 5 metres of surface area and have a generating capacity of about three kilowatts (kW).

This installation would generate about 280 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity a month.Under the microFIT price schedule, the payment for rooftop solar PV is 80.2 cents per kilowatt-hour. That’s about $7 a day or just over $2,500 a year. Purchase and installation costs could be recovered in about 12 years (estimated). This means you would get a 10%-15% ROI under MicroFIT with a 20 year guaranteed contract with the

OPA (Ontario Power Authority).

14 - 80.2 cents a KW/h depending which program you get involved in.

Be it Solar, Wind, or Renewable Biomass such as converting your hay

in to POWER which you could then earn 13.8 cents per kw/h

24 hours a day 7 days a week - on a Biomass MicroFit Contract.

With Net Metering every KW/h you produce is worth as much as you pay

for it. Therefore you do not end up paying a delivery charge on power you do

not end up using. By entering into a NET METERING agreement with Hydro One

you can stay connected to the grid always consuming the energy you produce first,

then only drawing on the grid when you are not producing the power you require -

and this all happens seamlessly.

Added Benefit:

If you are not using the power you are producing, you can store it on the grid,

and then use it at a later date.  With Net Metering, you can store your power for

up to 12 months. Hydro One will not pay you, however they will allow you to use the grid

to store your excess power so that you may draw from it at a later time. Ie cottage

site storing power all winter on the grid, then using it in the summer months.

With MicroFIT you receive 80.2 cents a KW/h and a separate account along with

a separate meter and a cheque is issued every month by the OPA.

Your regular energy bill will be the same as usual.
